Title: | The teaching of Shakespeare to ESL Learners in Gweru District Secondary schools: Problems and Solutions. | Authors: | Mureriwa, Catherine Shupikai | Keywords: | teaching of Shakespeare ESL Learners problems and solutions |
Issue Date: | May-2018 | Publisher: | Midlands State University | Abstract: | The study sought to establish the problems and solutions in teaching Shakespeare to ESL learners in Gweru Urban schools. The problem is that both ESL learners and teachers encounter problems in tackling Shakespeare. The focus of this study therefore hinges on establishing appropriate strategies of teaching Shakespearean Literature. Respondents of the study were teachers and learners from the sampled schools. The sample size was comprised of 12 teachers and 40 learners. The descriptive survey design was used and it will be complemented by questionnaires and interviews. Data was presented through tables and graphs. The study established that the problems encountered in teaching Shakespearean Literature were mainly due to negative attitudes by learners. Problems also emanate from lack of innovative teaching methods. The study also revealed that the works are socially, linguistically and culturally alien to learners. The study therefore recommends that curriculum developers should allow the use of contemporary versions of Shakespearean works. It also recommends that teachers should motivate learners enough to appreciate Shakespearean Literature and they should make use of more learner-centred approaches. It further recommends that teachers should receive training in ICT and parents and schools should avail enough books and internet access to help in the learning process. | URI: | http://hdl.handle.net/11408/3942 |
