MSU WRL virtual assessment system

Title: MSU WRL virtual assessment system
Authors: Chikodzi, Rodney
Abstract: The basis of the research project was to develop an online Work Related Learning (WRL) System for the Midlands State University. As it is a requirement for MSU students completing their second year in their respective degree programs to go for Work Related Learning in their third year .The MSU WRL Virtual Assessment System aims to solve the problems faced by the MSU Work Related Learning department after a realization that students on work related learning may not manage to meet the deadline of the submission of work related learning logbooks or reports due to some critical work commitments for example travelling abroad frequently to perform work activities there or for some workshops and hence a need for a platform for them to submit it online to their Academic Supervisors online. The current system was further studied in the analysis phase in order to gain a clear understanding of the problem area. This phase incorporated three fact finding tools namely, questionnaires, interviews and observations. These exposed weaknesses and strengths of the existing system.
However an information system entitled MSU WRL Virtual Assessment System was developed to counteract on the identified problems. This system was developed using PHP Laravel Framework, Bootstrap and MySQL database. It has turned out to be a success since it passed all testing stages elucidated in the implementation phase.
Therefore there is need for consistent maintenance of hardware and software that support the system. This is done so as to as to upkeep high system productivity within its operation. Systems network structure is also of concern since there is need to accommodate high information movement on the web server.

Intelligent rooster monitoring system

Title: Intelligent rooster monitoring system
Authors: Jonhera, Courage N
Abstract: Chicken rearing has been widely spread in the country for both economic purposes and family consumption. In both cases there is need to reduce the labour and solve problems caused by inadequate water supply and stunted rooster growth. The Intelligent Rooster Water Monitoring System solves this problem by making sure that the roosters always have water to drink as well as making sure that they are in a bearable environment. The system measures the amount of water left in the rooster canister and refills it when there is need. Buzzer sounds are produced to notify the water has reached its minimum level and its being refilled. Temperature and humidity of the rooster run are measured as well; in cases where the temperature is higher than the norm a cooling fan is switched on and when the temperature is lower than the norm a buzzer rings to notify the users of the system that there is need to warm the rooster run.

Intelligent zebra crossing system

Title: Intelligent zebra crossing system
Authors: Chevure, Kingdom
Abstract: The purpose of this study is to design an Intelligent Zebra Crossing system using Arduino. The main objective of the study is to manage and prioritise a smooth flow of the road users without causing any accidents at the zebra crossings, and to enforce the road rule to all those who have been vandalizing it. The system incorporates the concept of passive pedestrian detection to sense the presence of pedestrians and in turn automatically controls the traffic lights. It also makes use of an override pushbutton for in case of the failures faced by the PIR sensor on human detection. A surveillance camera is banded into the system to constantly manage the pedestrian crossing site and provide instant updates on any danger that may occur. Observations have been made to gather information for the study and hence the need to solve problems of the existing system using the proposed system was discovered. Relevant information gathering and electronic designing were incorporated into the designing of the system. Various tools have been used to design the proposed system and these may include Arduino IDE, C++, Arduino Uno microcontroller and sensors. A camera module was also part of the tools that were used in the design. Electric calculations were made on the components so that there will be proper power supply that will not damage the components. Each component was tested during the interfacing of the Arduino board and the components. The proposed intelligent system was tested and the results for all the experiments were recorded, the results confirmed that the system functionality was in agreement with the stated objectives. Finally, the proposed system was implemented hence solving the problems caused by the current system.

Email system for the visually impaired

Title: Email system for the visually impaired
Authors: Sikula, Shingirai
Abstract: The purpose of this project was to find and address the challenges faced by visually impaired persons when trying to communicate electronically. An emailing system was proposed and built. Email System for the visually impaired is a software system that aims to empower the blind and the visually impaired. It makes use of artificial cognitive intelligence to mimic human intelligence by converting user supplied voice message into text and then creating an email
message to send to the desired recipient. Also, the software system is capable of reading aloud new mail and adding recipients to a local user directory. This intelligent behavior is powered by cloud based services that handles the Artificial Intelligence that processes the conversions from text to speech and vice versa. Research was done by interviewing people from the Jairos Jiri home and using various online sources to conduct a literature review that evaluates current
systems and identifies gaps in these systems The information gathered was used to design the system and the design to implement the system. A speedy internet connection is recommended for this system to work smoothly.
