Title: An investigation into problems which the girl child faces when she drops out of school : a case study of Gutu district , Gona cluster
Authors: Ncube, Amos
Abstract: The girl child is still facing serious challenges after dropping out of school. To gain an insight on the problem, the study sought to investigate the problems faced by the girl child after dropping out of school. In carrying out the study, the problems faced by the girl child, implications after dropping out, policies in place for retention girls in school, as well as the possible solutions were explored. From the review of literature on school dropout in relation to the girl child, Maslow’s theory of motivation formed the basis of the literature review. Maslow (1943) postulated that human beings have intrinsic needs that need to be fulfilled in order for the person to realize the next need in the hierarchy of needs. If the needs are not met a person might device other means to meet those needs. In the context of this study, the needs of the girl child were assumed not to have been met if she prematurely dropped out of school. The theoretical and conceptual framework outlined the factors that lead to school dropouts and the implications emanating therefrom. Literature on girl child dropout showed that reasons and problems faced by the girls differed internationally, regionally and nationally. The study adopted the qualitative approach that used both the questionnaire and the interview to collect the information from the respondents. This study found out that a cumulative total of 156 children dropped out of school between the period years 2015 – 2016. 0f the 156 children, 93 are girls. The study also showed that girls who drop out of school exhibited low self-esteem. The reasons for dropping out of school were among others, early marriage, teenage pregnancy, poverty, and cultural factors such as ‘Kuzvarira’, betrothal. From the study results, it was shown that school dropout impacted negatively on the girl child’s personal development. The results showed that the education sector is not adequately funded, and national policies on the retention of the girl child are not fully implemented. The other pertinent result was that the limited social safety nets were grossly abused to the detriment of the girl child.

An investigation of the factors contributing to limited growth in youth informal sector businesses in Masvingo Province: a case Study of Zaka District.

Title: An investigation of the factors contributing to limited growth in youth informal sector businesses in Masvingo Province: a case Study of Zaka District.
Authors: Kakono, Tafirenyika
Abstract: This study was a contribution to the limited literature and knowledge on the performance of the rural informal sector businesses. The study sought to conduct an investigation of the factors contributing to limited growth in youth informal sector businesses in Masvingo Province: A Case Study of Zaka District. The study was motivated by the understanding that the informal sector was viewed as having great potential for employment creation and driving economic development. The investigation was conducted using a qualitative Case Study design and data was collected using the following research instruments; in-depth interview guides, observation, Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and Key Informant Interviews (KII). Literature at international, regional, and national levels was reviewed to provide insights in to knowledge that existed as well as gaps that required attention. The conclusions from the study were that; there was limited growth of youth informal sector businesses in Zaka and hence youth unemployment remained very high. The informal sector businesses required a lot of support to address the infrastructural, environmental and behavioural and, or perceptional challenges affecting business growth. Lack of appreciation of the potential of the informal sector to create employment and drive the economy by stakeholders affected support to the sector. Youth engaged in more consumption than re-investment activities and hence needed capacity development to address that negative behaviour. Stakeholders had more influence on types of businesses youth participated in and this was less sustainable. There were limited financial resources circulating in the informal sector businesses in Zaka. Limited but quality support was given to youth businesses leading to quality business decisions by the youth. Youth support needs were diverse and hence required well-coordinated, multidisciplinary approach. The conclusions meant that holistic support was needed for rural informal sector businesses to unlock their potential for employment creation and economic development.

Title: Preparedness of health facilities to deal with factors contributing to HIV drug resistance in adult patients on anti - retroviral therapy : a case study of a clinic in Tsholotsho District
Authors: Dube, Chiratidzo
Abstract: HIV infection was first discovered in 1980s in Zimbabwe. The government had designed many strategies to deal will HIV infection. These strategies included use of standardised guidelines and policies such as HIV policy and HIV treatment guidelines. These measures were designed to prevent HIV drug resistant infection by promoting viral load suppression. The level of preparedness to deal with factors contributing to development of drug resistant HIV infection amongst adult people living with HIV was established. This chapter provided background information to the problem, statement of the problem, research questions and objectives, significance of the study, delimitations and limitations of the study. A summary of the chapter was provided.

Title: An investigation into socio economic effects caused by the closure of companies: a case study of ZISCOSTEEL.
Authors: Singagwari, Clarridge
Abstract: This study‟s main focus area was to investigate the socio- economic effects of company closures. This research study is based on the background of numerous company closures across the globe and in Zimbabwe. Data was collected from the workers, company management, social services, nurses, police, councilors and teachers. Interviews and questionnaires were employed in the collection of data. The collected data was examined and interpreted. The study found out the majority of skilled workers moved on and what remains
are a semi- skilled and non-skilled workers who failed to move on because of lack of courses.
The Company last recruited six years ago, 75% of the workers are in their early forties and fifties and hence find it difficult to find employment elsewhere. The study also found out that the workers were owed sixty months wages, were not given severance packages and are facing challenges in buying food, paying bills, accessing medication, paying school fees. The study revealed 30 % of families broke down while crime and prostitution increased significantly. Social services are overwhelmed as 100% of the workers are in need of assistance. Basing on the findings of the study the researcher concluded that the workers are faced with serious socio economic challenges which they cannot overcome given the current
state of affairs .The study recommends that the Government and the Company should consider sourcing funds to pay the workers their severance packages to enable them to start income generating projects .The Government should also consider engaging other stakeholders such as Non-Governmental Organizations to help in the counselling of the workers as well as conducting and funding of vocational courses and self-sustenance projects.
