Authors: Singagwari, Clarridge
Abstract: This study‟s main focus area was to investigate the socio- economic effects of company closures. This research study is based on the background of numerous company closures across the globe and in Zimbabwe. Data was collected from the workers, company management, social services, nurses, police, councilors and teachers. Interviews and questionnaires were employed in the collection of data. The collected data was examined and interpreted. The study found out the majority of skilled workers moved on and what remains
are a semi- skilled and non-skilled workers who failed to move on because of lack of courses.
The Company last recruited six years ago, 75% of the workers are in their early forties and fifties and hence find it difficult to find employment elsewhere. The study also found out that the workers were owed sixty months wages, were not given severance packages and are facing challenges in buying food, paying bills, accessing medication, paying school fees. The study revealed 30 % of families broke down while crime and prostitution increased significantly. Social services are overwhelmed as 100% of the workers are in need of assistance. Basing on the findings of the study the researcher concluded that the workers are faced with serious socio economic challenges which they cannot overcome given the current
state of affairs .The study recommends that the Government and the Company should consider sourcing funds to pay the workers their severance packages to enable them to start income generating projects .The Government should also consider engaging other stakeholders such as Non-Governmental Organizations to help in the counselling of the workers as well as conducting and funding of vocational courses and self-sustenance projects.

Abstract: The study entitled ‘An evaluation of the Safety and Health Control Programmes in the Mining Sector: A case study of Mimosa Mine’, was carried out to find the solutions to the accidents that continue to happen in the mining sector. This was despite the fact that the Mining Sector has invested a lot of resources into Safety and Health and were pursuing a ZERO HARM trajectory which emphasized on Zero Accidents at workplaces. The study employed a descriptive case study approach in its investigation. The Mining Sector, Mining Employees and their Families, the Government and the Researcher were the key beneficiaries of the investigation. The study concluded that the Safety and Healthy Control Programmes were ineffective because of failure by management and employees to play their respective roles in the implementation of safety and health control programmes. Lack of engagement in the Safety and Healthy processes, production pressure and poor attitude of employees towards Safety and Health issues were highlighted as some of the key obstacles to making Safety and Health Control programmes effective. The researcher recommended engagement of employees from the formulation to the evaluation stages of safety and health control programs and attitude training programmes to employees by qualified practitioners among other recommendations preferably those with andragogical experience

Authors: Mutara, Eunice R.
Abstract: The focus of this research was on exploring the phenomenon of domestic violence perpetrated by men towards women. The research was inspired by the increasing incidences of women at State Universities and Zimbabwe as a whole who are being abused by men and therefore sought to get an understanding of the dynamics and trends of the phenomenon. The descriptive research design was used in order to describe the situation of domestic violence that is perpetrated by men on their spouses and partners. The study population comprised 10 participants including the researcher. The researcher employed questionnaires and focus group discussion as data collection instruments. In view of the questionnaire responses, the research ascertained that indeed the majority of women suffer abuses at the hands of their spouses and partners. The focus group discussion showed that even men suffer from abuses by their female counterparts but it is the female partner who is the most affected. The study
also found that women are mainly vulnerable because they are of financial dependence on men. In light of this, the researcher outlined views from key respondents which are measures that should be taken to address problems at family level and also to raise the awareness of the general populace concerning domestic and intimate partner violence that is being perpetrated by men towards women.

Authors: Mazhambe, Jane
Abstract: Children born with HIV survive with the pain and fears that come with it. They face many challenges some of which may even be life threatening. This therefore, requires them to have a clear understanding of their status and an effective and reliable support system so that they can effectively deal with these challenges. Mashonaland West Province is one of the Provinces with the highest HIV prevalence, prostitution, early marriages and pregnancies, hence this research intends to better help the community and the nation as a whole, better deal with this predicament. An inquiry was made on the HIV perinatals understanding of their status and the ART regimen, the challenges they face, the support systems available to them and their efficiency. Questionnaires, interviews and observations were used to collect data from nurses, HIV infected perinatals and guardians. Results showed that the challenges they are facing include stigma, disclosure, poverty, sex and reproductive issues, feelings of resentment, lack inefficient support system and access to ARVs. Identified support systems were local support groups, information walls, ART regimen, hospital counselling services, churches and the family institution. All these support systems were not given a total thumps up by the very people they are mostly designed for. Therefore, among other recommendations, the government and NGO’s should erect a suitable and reliable support system and also expand services of Africaid Zvandiri Adolescent Support Group across the nation. Lastly, the media and publishing companies should create a platform for the HIV perinatals to share, learn, have fun and address their concerns.
